Old Corolla Dies When Air Conditioning On?

bill my car is a 90 celica with the same engine and my ac can freeze alaska without making my car die. your ac compressor is probably not working. the ac compressor is located in front of the oil pan it has a rubber belt connected to it. i suggest to check your fan and your ac compressor belt to make sure the belt is spinning while its on. so open your hood turn your car on and ac and see if all your belts are spinning

pull down the evaporator and replace the expansion valve. auto climate control should start at 18*c then when it cools it should be just around 22*c. inside temperature of vehicles should only be 5*c less than the outside temp.. is that your picture standing infront of the height measuring board ? are you in prison ?

The compressor works with gas and gas only. That being said. The warm air from the inside house passes through the evaporator and the moisture sticks to the top of the coil and is carried off by the condensate pump. The air then returns to the house where it has less heat and moisture and feels cool to your moist skin. SORRY for getting anal but with the answers you were getting someone needed to. The expansion valve is located in the high side line at the evaporator coil. follow the small copper line. Hope this helps.

Look for a blend door that is not opening. Start at the engine compartment and you should find a vacuum hose, the smallest hoses on the engine, that connects to the nipple on the firewall. If it is not connected, then connect it there. If it is connected, look under the dash for the inside connection for this vacuum hose and it should go to a vacuum controller. Other than lack of vacuum, you could have a blend door that is hung up.

You need to get your outside condensor unit inspected. I think that is what you have. It might be low in freon. If so check the pressure lines comming in from the condensor are the freezing up (ice on them) if so it's time for a recharge. Also what is the life on the system. If the compressor is very old. The unit may not be compressing very well (compressor worn out). There also could be a possibility of the system not being powerfull enought. By the time the cold air gets to the upper floor it is not much pressure
